I’m not sure why DEI or cultural awareness became such bad words or terms.
We need to look beyond what people assume it is and look at what it actually is. The National
Center for Cultural Competencies defines cultural awareness as “being cognizant,
observant, and conscious of similarities and differences among and between cultural
groups”.
Why cultural compentence matters?
It should be noted that “awareness” of cultural differences and their impact
on behavior is the beginning of intercultural effectiveness. Cultural self-awareness
includes recognition of one’s own cultural influences upon values, beliefs, and
judgments, as well as the influences derived from the professional’s work culture.
To me, being aware of others (and ourselves) should be something we all strive to do so
why do we shy away from learning about others?
Why is understanding this in the workplace so important? It is crucial because it
promotes an inclusive environment where employees from diverse backgrounds feel
respected and valued. This, in turn, fosters better communication, reduces conflicts, and
promotes higher employee engagement and retention.
Having diverse viewpoints can lead to more innovation. You will see more creative problem solving,
and make better business decisions that resonate with a global customer base.
